Volterra equation of the first kind

Definition
Let , let , let be a kernel, and let be a given function. A linear Volterra equation of the first kind is the equation for an unknown function on . The unknown appears only inside the integral, and the upper limit of integration is the variable .
Remarks
Example: on is of the first kind with . Differentiating twice gives , and indeed . Non-example: is not of the first kind, since also appears outside the integral; it is a Volterra equation of the second kind. A necessary condition for a continuous solution when is continuous is , since the integral vanishes at . Often is required to be continuous on , but weakly singular kernels such as are also allowed, as in Abel's integral equation.
