Volterra equation of the second kind

Definition
Let , let , let be a kernel, let be a given function, and let . A linear Volterra equation of the second kind is the equation for an unknown function on . The unknown appears outside the integral with coefficient , and the upper limit of integration is the variable . The equation is homogeneous when .
Remarks
Example: on , with and . The function solves it: , so the right side is . This is the integral form of , , . Non-example: has the fixed upper limit , so it is a Fredholm equation, not a Volterra one. The usual standing hypotheses are that is continuous on and is continuous on ; then the unique solvability theorem applies. Setting for shows that a Volterra equation is a Fredholm equation with a kernel that vanishes above the diagonal.
