Builds on Lp spaceSpectrum of an operatorSpectral radiusSingular values of a compact operatorTrace class operator
Example
The Volterra operator is the operator on the Lp space given by It is the integral operator of the Volterra equation of the first kind with kernel for and for .
Check that it is a compact operator: the kernel is square-integrable on , with . So is a Hilbert–Schmidt integral operator, and Hilbert–Schmidt operators are compact.
Check that has no eigenvalue. If , then for all , so almost everywhere. If with , then is continuous, hence is continuously differentiable, and with ; so .
Check that the spectrum is . The power has kernel for , so . Hence the spectral radius is , while is in the spectrum because a compact operator on an infinite-dimensional space is not invertible.
Remarks
The operator norm of is . Its singular values are , , which are square-summable but not summable, so is not a trace class operator. The adjoint is , and is the rank-one operator . The Volterra operator is the standard example of a nonzero quasinilpotent compact operator: its spectrum is the same as that of the zero operator.
