Definition
Let be a contact manifold of dimension and let be a smooth fibre bundle over a smooth manifold of dimension . The bundle is a Legendrian fibration if each fibre is a Legendrian submanifold of . Let be a Legendrian immersion, that is, and maps each tangent space of into . The composition is a Legendrian map. Its wave front (or front) is the image .
Remarks
The model case is the contact structure on the jet space of a manifold of dimension , with coordinates , contact form , and . The fibres are Legendrian, since and along them.
Example: and . Along , and , so and is a Legendrian embedding. Its front is the curve in the -plane, a semicubical parabola with a cusp at the origin, although itself is smooth with nonzero velocity.
Non-example: the curve in is not Legendrian, since ; so its projection is not a front in this sense.
For the -jet lift of a smooth function , the front is the graph of . Where the front is a smooth hypersurface not tangent to the -direction, the Legendrian submanifold is recovered from it by .
