Wavelet packet decomposition
Definition
Let and be the real low-pass and high-pass filters of an orthonormal wavelet, with , as in the fast wavelet transform. For a sequence define the sequences and by Let be a sequence and let be an integer. The wavelet packet decomposition of to depth is the family of sequences , for and , defined by
- ;
- and for .
The sequences are the nodes of a full binary tree, in which has children and .
Remarks
The discrete wavelet transform keeps only the nodes and , that is, it splits only the low-pass branch again.
Each step is an orthogonal transform of , by the orthonormality of the filters. So for every admissible subtree, in which each node is either a leaf or has both children, the leaves together determine and preserve its energy. For a finite signal of length with periodic extension, every level contains coefficients in total.
Example: with the Haar filters and , level gives and . Level gives , , and . The energy of is kept in each level.
Non-example: if only is applied at a node and is dropped, the leaves no longer determine the signal. With the Haar filters, and both have -output .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
