Definition

Let f ⁣:ℝ→ℂf \colon \R \to \C be measurable with ∫ℝ∣f(y)∣ e−cy2 dy<∞\int_\R \abs{f(y)}\, e^{-c y^2}\, dy < \infty for every c>0c > 0. The Weierstrass transform of ff is the function Wf ⁣:ℝ→ℂWf \colon \R \to \C given by (Wf)(x)=14π∫ℝf(y) e−(x−y)2/4 dy.(Wf)(x) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{4\pi}} \int_\R f(y)\, e^{-(x - y)^2/4}\, dy.

Remarks

The kernel 14πe−u2/4\frac{1}{\sqrt{4\pi}} e^{-u^2/4} is the density of the normal distribution with mean 00 and variance 22. So Wf(x)=𝔼[f(x+Y)]Wf(x) = \mathbb{E}[f(x + Y)] for a random variable YY with that law. It is the heat kernel 14πte−u2/(4t)\frac{1}{\sqrt{4\pi t}} e^{-u^2/(4t)} at t=1t = 1, so Wf=u(⋅,1)Wf = u(\cdot, 1) where uu solves the heat equation ut=uxxu_t = u_{xx} with u(⋅,0)=fu(\cdot, 0) = f. For integrable ff and f^(ξ)=∫f(x)e−ixξ dx\hat f(\xi) = \int f(x) e^{-i x \xi}\, dx, one has Wf^(ξ)=e−ξ2f^(ξ)\widehat{Wf}(\xi) = e^{-\xi^2} \hat f(\xi). The growth condition can be weakened to ∫∣f(y)∣e−cy2 dy<∞\int \abs{f(y)} e^{-c y^2}\, dy < \infty for one c<14c < \frac14, which is enough for the integral to converge for every xx.

Example: f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2. With YY of mean 00 and variance 22, Wf(x)=𝔼[(x+Y)2]=x2+2x 𝔼[Y]+𝔼[Y2]=x2+2Wf(x) = \mathbb{E}[(x + Y)^2] = x^2 + 2x\, \mathbb{E}[Y] + \mathbb{E}[Y^2] = x^2 + 2. Likewise W[eax](x)=eax𝔼[eaY]=ea2eaxW[e^{a x}](x) = e^{a x} \mathbb{E}[e^{aY}] = e^{a^2} e^{a x} for every real aa.

Non-example: f(x)=ex2/4f(x) = e^{x^2/4} fails the condition for c<14c < \frac14, and indeed ∫ℝey2/4e−(x−y)2/4 dy=e−x2/4∫ℝexy/2 dy\int_\R e^{y^2/4} e^{-(x-y)^2/4}\, dy = e^{-x^2/4} \int_\R e^{x y/2}\, dy diverges for every xx.
