Definition
Let be a Noetherian integral separated scheme that is regular in codimension one. This means that the local ring of at every point of codimension one is a regular local ring of dimension one. A prime divisor on is a closed integral subscheme of codimension one. A Weil divisor on is an element of the free abelian group generated by the prime divisors. So it is a finite formal sum with and prime divisors .
Remarks
Let be a prime divisor with generic point . The local ring is a discrete valuation ring, with valuation on the function field of . For , the principal divisor of is , which is a finite sum. On over a field , the function has . A closed point of is not a prime divisor, since it has codimension two, not one. The quotient of by the principal divisors is the divisor class group . For example, by the degree, for .
