Well-founded order

Builds on Partial orderWell-founded relation

Definition

Let (P,≤)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set, and write x<yx < y when x≤yx \le y and x≠yx \ne y. The order is well-founded when every nonempty subset A⊆PA \subseteq P has a minimal element, that is, an element m∈Am \in A such that no a∈Aa \in A satisfies a<ma < m.

Remarks

Example: the set ℕ2\N^2 with the product order, (a,b)≤(c,d)(a, b) \le (c, d) when a≤ca \le c and b≤db \le d, is well-founded. Check: in a nonempty A⊆ℕ2A \subseteq \N^2, take the least first coordinate a0a_0 occurring in AA, and then the least b0b_0 with (a0,b0)∈A(a_0, b_0) \in A; no element of AA is strictly below (a0,b0)(a_0, b_0).

Non-example: the set {1/n:n≥1}\set{1/n : n \ge 1} of rational numbers with the usual order is not well-founded, since the whole set has no minimal element.

The order is well-founded exactly when the strict order << is a well-founded relation. With the axiom of dependent choice, the condition is equivalent to the absence of an infinite sequence x0>x1>x2>⋯x_0 > x_1 > x_2 > \cdots. The same definition applies to a preorder, with x<yx < y meaning x≤yx \le y and not y≤xy \le x.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
