Associative rings and algebras Definition
Weyl algebra
Definition
Let be a field and let be an integer. Let be the free algebra on generators. Let be the two-sided ideal generated by the elements for , where is if and otherwise. The -th Weyl algebra is the quotient ring .
Remarks
The monomials with form a basis of over . Example: in , with , one gets . This matches the rule for the operators of multiplication by and differentiation. Non-example: the commutative polynomial ring satisfies the first two kinds of relations but has . If has characteristic , then is a simple Noetherian domain with center . If has characteristic , then lies in the center of , and is not simple. Equivalently, is the Ore extension .
