Definition

Let XX be a closed subset of ℝN\R^N. Let SS and S′S' be disjoint smooth submanifolds of ℝN\R^N and let y∈S′y \in S'. The pair (S,S′)(S, S') satisfies Whitney's condition (b) at yy if the following holds. Take any sequences xk∈Sx_k \in S and yk∈S′y_k \in S' that both converge to yy, with xk≠ykx_k \ne y_k. If the tangent spaces TxkST_{x_k} S converge to a subspace τ\tau and the lines through xkx_k and yky_k converge to a line ℓ\ell, then ℓ⊆τ\ell \subseteq \tau. The pair satisfies condition (a) at yy if the following holds. For every sequence xk∈Sx_k \in S converging to yy such that TxkST_{x_k} S converges to a subspace τ\tau, one has TyS′⊆τT_y S' \subseteq \tau.

A Whitney stratification of XX is a locally finite partition of XX into connected smooth submanifolds of ℝN\R^N, called strata, such that:

  1. each stratum is locally closed in XX;
  2. if a stratum S′S' meets the closure S‾\overline{S} of a stratum S≠S′S \ne S', then S′⊆S‾∖SS' \subseteq \overline{S} \setminus S (the frontier condition);
  3. every such pair (S,S′)(S, S') satisfies condition (b) at every point of S′S'.

Remarks

Condition (b) implies condition (a). The same definition applies to subsets of ℂN=ℝ2N\C^N = \R^{2N}, and for complex analytic sets one asks the strata to be complex submanifolds.

Example: the cone X={x2+y2=z2}⊂ℝ3X = \set{x^2 + y^2 = z^2} \subset \R^3 with three strata: {0}\set{0} and the two connected components of X∖{0}X \setminus \set{0}, where z>0z > 0 and z<0z < 0. The frontier condition holds, and condition (b) holds at 00. Indeed, the cone is a union of lines through 00, so the line from 00 to xkx_k lies in the tangent plane TxkXT_{x_k} X, hence also in the limit plane.

Non-example: the complex Whitney umbrella X={x2=zy2}⊂ℂ3X = \set{x^2 = z y^2} \subset \C^3 with the two strata S′S', the zz-axis, and S=X∖S′S = X \setminus S'. The surface SS is smooth, since the gradient (2x,−2zy,−y2)(2x, -2zy, -y^2) of x2−zy2x^2 - z y^2 is nonzero off the zz-axis. Every point (0,0,c)(0, 0, c) is a limit of points (c t,t,c)(\sqrt{c}\, t, t, c) of SS as t→0t \to 0, so the frontier condition holds. For small real s>0s > 0, the point xs=(s3/2,s1/2,s2)x_s = (s^{3/2}, s^{1/2}, s^2) lies on SS and tends to 00. There the normal vector is (2s3/2,−2s5/2,−s)(2 s^{3/2}, -2 s^{5/2}, -s), which, divided by ss, tends to (0,0,−1)(0, 0, -1). So TxsST_{x_s} S tends to the complex plane z=0z = 0, which does not contain T0S′T_0 S', the zz-axis. Condition (a) fails at 00, so condition (b) fails too. The origin must be made a stratum of its own: the strata SS, the zz-axis minus 00, and {0}\set{0} form a Whitney stratification.
