Whitney umbrella
Builds on Singularity of a smooth mapDifferential of a smooth map
Example
The Whitney umbrella is the surface in with equation It contains the image of the smooth map , , since .
Check of the singularity: the differential of has matrix Its first two rows show that it has rank unless . For , its first and third rows show that it has rank unless . So the origin is the only singular point of , and there the rank is .
The points with have the two preimages , so the image crosses itself along the positive -axis. The origin has the single preimage and is called the pinch point. The points with satisfy the equation but are not in the image of ; they form the handle of the umbrella.
Remarks
The map germ of at the origin is the cross-cap. Whitney showed that, besides immersion germs, the cross-cap is the only singularity of a generic smooth map from a surface into -space, and that it is stable.
