Definition

Let κ\kappa and μ\mu be complex numbers, let z∈ℂ∖(−∞,0]z \in \C \setminus (-\infty, 0], and use principal branches of powers of zz. Let M(a,b,z)M(a, b, z) be Kummer's function and U(a,b,z)U(a, b, z) the Tricomi function. If 2μ∉{−1,−2,−3,… }2\mu \notin \set{-1, -2, -3, \dots}, the Whittaker function Mκ,μM_{\kappa, \mu} is Mκ,μ(z)=e−z/2zμ+12 M(μ−κ+12, 1+2μ, z).M_{\kappa, \mu}(z) = e^{-z/2} z^{\mu + \frac12}\, M\left( \mu - \kappa + \tfrac12,\ 1 + 2\mu,\ z \right). For all κ,μ\kappa, \mu, the Whittaker function Wκ,μW_{\kappa, \mu} is Wκ,μ(z)=e−z/2zμ+12 U(μ−κ+12, 1+2μ, z).W_{\kappa, \mu}(z) = e^{-z/2} z^{\mu + \frac12}\, U\left( \mu - \kappa + \tfrac12,\ 1 + 2\mu,\ z \right).

Remarks

Both functions solve Whittaker's equation d2wdz2+(−14+κz+14−μ2z2)w=0.\frac{d^2 w}{dz^2} + \left( -\frac14 + \frac{\kappa}{z} + \frac{\frac14 - \mu^2}{z^2} \right) w = 0. This follows from Kummer's equation for MM and UU by the substitution w=e−z/2zb/2yw = e^{-z/2} z^{b/2} y with b=1+2μb = 1 + 2\mu. Example: for κ=0\kappa = 0 and μ=12\mu = \frac12, one has U(1,2,z)=z−1U(1, 2, z) = z^{-1}, so W0,1/2(z)=e−z/2W_{0, 1/2}(z) = e^{-z/2}. Check: w=e−z/2w = e^{-z/2} gives w′′=14ww'' = \frac14 w, and the equation becomes (14−14+0+0)w=0\left( \frac14 - \frac14 + 0 + 0 \right) w = 0. Non-example: for κ=1\kappa = 1 and μ=12\mu = \frac12, the function e−z/2e^{-z/2} is not a solution, since the equation leaves the term 1ze−z/2≠0\frac{1}{z} e^{-z/2} \ne 0. As z→∞z \to \infty with ∣arg⁡z∣<3π2−δ\abs{\arg z} < \frac{3\pi}{2} - \delta, one has Wκ,μ(z)∼e−z/2zκW_{\kappa, \mu}(z) \sim e^{-z/2} z^{\kappa}. The equation depends on μ\mu only through μ2\mu^2, and indeed Wκ,−μ=Wκ,μW_{\kappa, -\mu} = W_{\kappa, \mu}.
