Example
Let and , , be real, jointly wide-sense stationary processes with mean . Write and ; they do not depend on . The task is to estimate by a causal linear filter of the observations, , with the smallest mean square error . The optimal impulse response satisfies the Wiener filter equation This is a Wiener–Hopf equation of the first kind with kernel .
Check of the equation. The error of the best filter is orthogonal to every observation with . Otherwise a small change of would lower the error. So . The left side is and the expectation under the integral is , which gives the equation. The condition holds only for , because the filter may use only the past.
Remarks
Without the causality condition, the equation holds for all , and the Fourier transform solves it: , with the spectral densities given by the Wiener–Khinchin theorem. With causality, the Wiener–Hopf method applies. One factors into factors without zeros in the two half-planes. The causal filter is then , where keeps the part that comes from a function supported on . This step is called spectral factorization.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
