Wigner distribution function
Builds on Lp spaceFourier transform
Definition
Let (see Lp space). The Wigner distribution of is the function , for (time) and (frequency).
Remarks
The integral converges absolutely for each , by the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality. is real-valued, since replacing by turns the integral into its complex conjugate. For in the Schwartz space, and , where is the Fourier transform. In quantum mechanics the Wigner function of a wave function is usually written with Planck's constant and a normalizing factor.
Example: let , so that . Then , and the Fourier transform of is . So , and integrating in gives .
Non-example: the Wigner distribution is quadratic in , not linear. For instance when .
