Definition

Let GG be a finite graph with chromatic number ฯ‡(G)\chi(G). Let ๐’ž\mathcal C be a set of colors with โˆฃ๐’žโˆฃ=ฯ‡(G)|\mathcal C|=\chi(G).

Words and profiles are defined as follows.

A word on GG is any map w:V(G)โ†’๐’žw:V(G)\to\mathcal C. The word need not be a proper colouring: adjacent vertices may get the same color.

The profile of a word ww is the vector ๐ฆ(w)=(mX(w))Xโˆˆ๐’ž\mathbf m(w)=(m_X(w))_{X\in\mathcal C}. Its entry mX(w)=โˆฃwโˆ’1(X)โˆฃm_X(w)=|w^{-1}(X)| is the number of vertices of color XX.

Vectors are written in bold, and inequalities between vectors hold in every coordinate. The vector ๐žX\mathbf e_X has entry 11 at XX and 00 elsewhere. The vector ๐Ÿ\mathbf 1 has every entry equal to 11.

Let ๐’ซ(G)\mathcal P(G) be the set of proper colorings of GG with palette ๐’ž\mathcal C. Since โˆฃ๐’žโˆฃ=ฯ‡(G)|\mathcal C|=\chi(G), each coloring in ๐’ซ(G)\mathcal P(G) uses every color.

A profile ๐ฆ\mathbf m is feasible if ๐ฆ=๐ฆ(w)\mathbf m=\mathbf m(w) for some wโˆˆ๐’ซ(G)w\in\mathcal P(G).

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 4 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
