Wright omega function

Builds on Lambert W function

Definition

Let WkW_k, for k∈ℤk \in \Z, be the branches of the Lambert W function over ℂ\C. For z∈ℂz \in \C, let K(z)=⌈Im⁡z−π2π⌉K(z) = \ceil{\frac{\operatorname{Im} z - \pi}{2\pi}} be the unwinding number. The Wright omega function is ω(z)=WK(z)(ez).\omega(z) = W_{K(z)}(e^z).

Remarks

Example: for real xx, Im⁡x=0\operatorname{Im} x = 0 and K(x)=⌈−12⌉=0K(x) = \ceil{-\tfrac12} = 0, so ω(x)=W0(ex)\omega(x) = W_0(e^x). It is the unique real y>0y > 0 with y+ln⁡y=xy + \ln y = x, since yey=exy e^y = e^x is the same equation and y↦y+ln⁡yy \mapsto y + \ln y is a strictly increasing bijection from (0,∞)(0, \infty) onto ℝ\R. For instance ω(1)=1\omega(1) = 1, and ω(0)=W0(1)≈0.5671\omega(0) = W_0(1) \approx 0.5671, the omega constant.

Non-example: W0(ez)W_0(e^z) is not ω(z)\omega(z) in general. For z=4πiz = 4\pi i, K(z)=⌈3/2⌉=2K(z) = \ceil{3/2} = 2, so ω(4πi)=W2(1)\omega(4\pi i) = W_2(1), which is not real, while W0(e4πi)=W0(1)W_0(e^{4\pi i}) = W_0(1) is real.

The function ω\omega is single-valued. With the principal branch of the logarithm, ω(z)+ln⁡ω(z)=z\omega(z) + \ln \omega(z) = z holds for every zz except possibly on the two half-lines {t±iπ:t≤−1}\set{t \pm i\pi : t \le -1}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
