Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) be an oriented Riemannian manifold of dimension nn. Let GG be a compact Lie group with Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak{g}, and let P→MP \to M be a principal GG-bundle. Let AA be a connection on PP with curvature FAF_A, a 22-form on MM with values in the adjoint bundle ad P=P×G𝔤\mathrm{ad}\, P = P \times_G \mathfrak{g}. Let dAd_A be the exterior covariant derivative of AA on ad P\mathrm{ad}\, P-valued forms, and let ⋆\star be the Hodge star operator of gg. The connection AA satisfies the Yang–Mills equations if dA⋆FA=0.d_A \star F_A = 0. Such a connection is called a Yang–Mills connection.

Remarks

The equation is equivalent to dA∗FA=0d_A^* F_A = 0, where dA∗d_A^* is the formal adjoint of dAd_A. Every connection also satisfies the Bianchi identity dAFA=0d_A F_A = 0. For compact MM, the Yang–Mills connections are the critical points of the Yang–Mills functional YM(A)=12∫M∣FA∣2 dvolg\mathrm{YM}(A) = \tfrac{1}{2} \int_M \abs{F_A}^2 \, d\mathrm{vol}_g, where the norm uses an invariant inner product on 𝔤\mathfrak{g}.

Example: a flat connection, with FA=0F_A = 0, satisfies the equations. On a four-manifold, a connection with ⋆FA=±FA\star F_A = \pm F_A, an instanton or anti-instanton, also satisfies them, because dA⋆FA=±dAFA=0d_A \star F_A = \pm d_A F_A = 0 by the Bianchi identity.

Non-example: let M=ℝ4M = \R^4 with the Euclidean metric and G=U(1)G = U(1), so that dA=dd_A = d, and take A=ix12 dx2A = i x_1^2 \, dx_2. Then FA=2ix1 dx1∧dx2F_A = 2i x_1 \, dx_1 \wedge dx_2, ⋆FA=2ix1 dx3∧dx4\star F_A = 2i x_1 \, dx_3 \wedge dx_4, and d⋆FA=2i dx1∧dx3∧dx4≠0d \star F_A = 2i \, dx_1 \wedge dx_3 \wedge dx_4 \ne 0.

For G=U(1)G = U(1) and a Lorentzian metric the equations are Maxwell's equations in vacuum.
