Definition
Let be a compact oriented Riemannian manifold without boundary, with volume form . Let be a compact Lie group with Lie algebra . Fix an inner product on that is invariant under the adjoint action of . Let be a principal -bundle, and let be its adjoint bundle. For a connection on , let be its curvature, a -form on with values in . The metric and the inner product on give a pointwise norm . The Yang–Mills functional is the map from the space of connections on to given by
Remarks
Many authors omit the factor ; this does not change the critical points. The functional is invariant under gauge transformations, since and the inner product is invariant. Its Euler–Lagrange equation is , the Yang–Mills equations.
Example: let with Lie algebra and inner product , and let be the trivial bundle. A connection is for a real -form , and its curvature is . So , the energy of the electromagnetic field with potential . It vanishes exactly when , that is, when is flat.
Non-example: the integral for a matrix group on a -manifold is not the Yang–Mills functional. By Chern–Weil theory its value depends only on the bundle and not on , so it has no variational content.
