Zernike polynomials

Builds on Polynomials in several variables

Definition

Let nn and mm be integers with 0≤m≤n0 \le m \le n and n−mn - m even. The radial polynomial RnmR_n^m on [0,1][0, 1] is Rnm(ρ)=∑k=0(n−m)/2(−1)k (n−k)!k! (n+m2−k)! (n−m2−k)! ρn−2k.R_n^m(\rho) = \sum_{k=0}^{(n - m)/2} \frac{(-1)^k \, (n - k)!}{k! \, \left( \frac{n + m}{2} - k \right)! \, \left( \frac{n - m}{2} - k \right)!} \, \rho^{n - 2k}. The Zernike polynomials are the functions on the closed unit disk, written in polar coordinates (ρ,φ)(\rho, \varphi) with 0≤ρ≤10 \le \rho \le 1, given by Znm(ρ,φ)=Rnm(ρ)cos⁡(mφ),Z_n^m(\rho, \varphi) = R_n^m(\rho) \cos(m\varphi), and, for m>0m > 0, Zn−m(ρ,φ)=Rnm(ρ)sin⁡(mφ).Z_n^{-m}(\rho, \varphi) = R_n^m(\rho) \sin(m\varphi).

Remarks

Each Zn±mZ_n^{\pm m} is a polynomial in the two variables x=ρcos⁡φx = \rho \cos \varphi and y=ρsin⁡φy = \rho \sin \varphi, of degree nn. Examples: Z00=1Z_0^0 = 1, Z11=ρcos⁡φ=xZ_1^1 = \rho \cos \varphi = x and Z20=2ρ2−1=2x2+2y2−1Z_2^0 = 2\rho^2 - 1 = 2x^2 + 2y^2 - 1. Check for R20R_2^0: the term k=0k = 0 is 2!0! 1! 1!ρ2=2ρ2\frac{2!}{0! \, 1! \, 1!} \rho^2 = 2\rho^2 and the term k=1k = 1 is −1!1! 0! 0!=−1-\frac{1!}{1! \, 0! \, 0!} = -1. Orthogonality: ∫01Rnm(ρ)Rn′m(ρ) ρ dρ=δnn′2(n+1)\int_0^1 R_n^m(\rho) R_{n'}^m(\rho) \, \rho \, d\rho = \frac{\delta_{n n'}}{2(n + 1)}; for example ∫01(2ρ2−1)ρ dρ=12−12=0\int_0^1 (2\rho^2 - 1) \rho \, d\rho = \frac12 - \frac12 = 0. The normalisation is Rnm(1)=1R_n^m(1) = 1. The radial parts are Jacobi polynomials: Rnm(ρ)=(−1)(n−m)/2ρmP(n−m)/2(m,0)(1−2ρ2)R_n^m(\rho) = (-1)^{(n - m)/2} \rho^m P_{(n - m)/2}^{(m, 0)}(1 - 2\rho^2). Non-example: n=1n = 1, m=0m = 0 is excluded because n−mn - m is odd. The natural candidate ρ=x2+y2\rho = \sqrt{x^2 + y^2} is rotation invariant but is not a polynomial in xx and yy.
