Zeros of Bessel functions
Builds on Bessel function of the first kind
Definition
Let be real and let be the Bessel function of the first kind of order . The positive zeros of form an infinite set with no finite accumulation point. For , the -th zero of is the -th smallest element of this set, so that
Remarks
For , every zero of in is real and simple, so the and their negatives are all of them. Example: , so ; the check is and on . Numerical values: and . The zeros of and interlace: . For fixed , as , and (McMahon's expansion). A non-example: is a zero of for , but it is not one of the , which are positive by definition.
