Definition
Let be a closed smooth manifold of dimension with a Hermitian vector bundle . Let be a formally self-adjoint elliptic differential operator of order on , with nonnegative spectrum. Let be its nonzero eigenvalues, counted with multiplicity. Its spectral zeta function converges for and has a meromorphic continuation to that is holomorphic at . The zeta-regularized determinant of is If it is written .
Remarks
It is the zeta-regularized product of the nonzero eigenvalues. For the Laplace–Beltrami operator, is the Minakshisundaram–Pleijel zeta function. If were a positive definite matrix, and the definition would give the usual determinant. The regularized determinant is not multiplicative in general: may differ from by a multiplicative anomaly.
Example: on let . The nonzero eigenvalues are with multiplicity , so and , using . Hence .
Non-example: the operator with on has the negative eigenvalue . It does not fit the definition, since for needs a choice of branch of the logarithm.
