Zonal spherical harmonics

Summary

Fix a point yy of the sphere and a degree ℓ\ell. The zonal spherical harmonic Zy(ℓ)Z_y^{(\ell)} is the spherical harmonic of degree ℓ\ell that reproduces the value at yy of every harmonic of degree ℓ\ell. It is invariant under the rotations that fix yy, so it depends only on the angle between xx and yy. It is a multiple of a Gegenbauer polynomial in x⋅yx \cdot y, and of the Legendre polynomial Pℓ(x⋅y)P_\ell(x \cdot y) on the sphere in ℝ3\R^3. It is the building block of expansions in spherical harmonics and of the Poisson kernel of the ball.
