Zonal spherical harmonics

Builds on Spherical harmonicsInner product

Definition

Let d≥2d \ge 2 and ℓ≥0\ell \ge 0 be integers, and let σ\sigma be the surface measure on the unit sphere Sd−1⊂ℝdS^{d-1} \subset \R^d. Let ℋℓ\mathcal{H}_\ell be the space of spherical harmonics of degree ℓ\ell on Sd−1S^{d-1}. Equip ℋℓ\mathcal{H}_\ell with the inner product ⟨f,g,=⟩∫Sd−1f g‾ dσ\ip{f, g} = \int_{S^{d-1}} f \, \overline{g} \, d\sigma. Let y∈Sd−1y \in S^{d-1}. The zonal spherical harmonic of degree ℓ\ell with pole yy is the unique Zy(ℓ)∈ℋℓZ_y^{(\ell)} \in \mathcal{H}_\ell such that Y(y)=∫Sd−1Y(x) Zy(ℓ)(x)‾ dσ(x)for all Y∈ℋℓ.Y(y) = \int_{S^{d-1}} Y(x) \, \overline{Z_y^{(\ell)}(x)} \, d\sigma(x) \quad \text{for all } Y \in \mathcal{H}_\ell.

Remarks

It exists and is unique because Y↦Y(y)Y \mapsto Y(y) is a linear functional on the finite-dimensional inner product space ℋℓ\mathcal{H}_\ell. If Y1,…,YNY_1, \dots, Y_N is an orthonormal basis of ℋℓ\mathcal{H}_\ell, then Zy(ℓ)(x)=∑j=1NYj(x)Yj(y)‾Z_y^{(\ell)}(x) = \sum_{j=1}^{N} Y_j(x) \overline{Y_j(y)}. It is real-valued, and Zgy(ℓ)(gx)=Zy(ℓ)(x)Z_{gy}^{(\ell)}(gx) = Z_y^{(\ell)}(x) for every rotation gg, so it depends only on x⋅yx \cdot y. Example: for d=3d = 3 and ℓ=1\ell = 1, Zy(1)(x)=34π x⋅yZ_y^{(1)}(x) = \frac{3}{4\pi} \, x \cdot y. Check: every Y∈ℋ1Y \in \mathcal{H}_1 has the form Y(x)=x⋅aY(x) = x \cdot a with a∈ℂ3a \in \C^3, and ∫S2(x⋅a)(x⋅y) dσ(x)=4π3 a⋅y\int_{S^2} (x \cdot a)(x \cdot y) \, d\sigma(x) = \frac{4\pi}{3} \, a \cdot y, so the integral returns a⋅y=Y(y)a \cdot y = Y(y). Non-example: the function x↦x⋅yx \mapsto x \cdot y itself is zonal and lies in ℋ1\mathcal{H}_1, but it fails the reproducing identity, since it returns 4π3Y(y)\frac{4\pi}{3} Y(y) instead of Y(y)Y(y). In general Zy(ℓ)(x)=Nσ(Sd−1)Cℓ(λ)(x⋅y)Cℓ(λ)(1)Z_y^{(\ell)}(x) = \frac{N}{\sigma(S^{d-1})} \frac{C_\ell^{(\lambda)}(x \cdot y)}{C_\ell^{(\lambda)}(1)} for d≥3d \ge 3, with λ=d−22\lambda = \frac{d - 2}{2}, N=dim⁡ℋℓN = \dim \mathcal{H}_\ell and Cℓ(λ)C_\ell^{(\lambda)} the Gegenbauer polynomial.
