600-cell
Builds on Schläfli symbolGolden ratio
Description
The 600-cell is the convex regular polytope in with Schläfli symbol . Its cells are regular tetrahedra, five around each edge, and its vertex figure is a regular icosahedron. It has vertices, edges, triangular faces and cells.
A model: let be the golden ratio. Take the points obtained from by permuting coordinates, and the points . Add the points obtained from by even permutations of the coordinates. These points lie on the unit sphere, and their convex hull is a 600-cell with edge length .
Check of the counts: the icosahedral vertex figure has vertices, so each vertex lies on edges and there are edges. Each tetrahedron has triangles, each lying in cells, so faces. Then .
Remarks
The 600-cell is the dual of the 120-cell, and its symmetry group is the reflection group of order . Read as unit quaternions, the vertices of the model above form a group under multiplication, the binary icosahedral group. It is the four-dimensional analogue of the icosahedron .
