Golden ratio

Description

The golden ratio is the real number φ=1+52≈1.6180339887.\varphi = \frac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2} \approx 1.6180339887. It is the positive root of the polynomial x2−x−1x^2 - x - 1, so φ2=φ+1\varphi^2 = \varphi + 1. The other root is ψ=1−52=1−φ=−1φ\psi = \frac{1 - \sqrt{5}}{2} = 1 - \varphi = -\frac{1}{\varphi}.

Remarks

Two positive numbers a>ba > b are in the golden ratio when a+ba=ab\frac{a + b}{a} = \frac{a}{b}. Then ab=φ\frac{a}{b} = \varphi. The number φ\varphi is irrational, because 5\sqrt{5} is irrational. The ratios of consecutive Fibonacci numbers tend to φ\varphi. Binet's formula uses φ\varphi and ψ\psi.
