Sturmian word
Builds on Combinatorics on wordsIrrational numberGolden ratio
Example
A Sturmian word is an infinite word over that has exactly distinct factors of length for every . A factor of length is a block . Equivalently, there are an irrational number and a real with the following property. For all , , or the same holds with in place of . Then exactly when the point of the circle lies in a fixed arc of length . So codes the irrational rotation by .
The Fibonacci word is the main instance. Define , and for . Each is a prefix of , and the limit is Check for small : the factors of length are , and those of length are , since never occurs. So there are and of them, as required. For the word has zeros and ones, with the Fibonacci numbers (). So the frequency of the letter is , where is the golden ratio.
Remarks
A word with at most factors of length for some is eventually periodic, by a theorem of Morse and Hedlund. So Sturmian words are the aperiodic words of the lowest possible complexity. The closure of the shift orbit of a Sturmian word is a minimal shift space on which the shift has zero entropy.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
