Functions of a complex variable Proposition

A complex number times its conjugate

Builds on Complex conjugateModulus of a complex number

Statement

Let zz be a complex number, let zˉ\bar{z} be its conjugate and let ∣z∣|z| be its modulus. Then zzˉ=∣z∣2.z \bar{z} = |z|^2. In particular, zzˉz \bar{z} is a nonnegative real number.

Remarks

With z=a+biz = a + b i: (a+bi)(a−bi)=a2−(bi)2=a2+b2(a + b i)(a - b i) = a^2 - (b i)^2 = a^2 + b^2. This identity gives the formula for the inverse of a complex number. It also gives a quick proof that the modulus is multiplicative.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
