Abel equation

Builds on Iterative functional equationFunction

Definition

Let XX be a set and let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X be a given map. The Abel equation for ff is the iterative functional equation α(f(x))=α(x)+1for all x∈X,\alpha(f(x)) = \alpha(x) + 1 \quad \text{for all } x \in X, for an unknown function α ⁣:X→ℝ\alpha \colon X \to \R or α ⁣:X→ℂ\alpha \colon X \to \C. A solution is called an Abel function of ff.

Remarks

Example: for f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 on X=(1,∞)X = (1, \infty), α(x)=log⁡2ln⁡x\alpha(x) = \log_2 \ln x is a solution, since log⁡2ln⁡(x2)=log⁡2(2ln⁡x)=log⁡2ln⁡x+1\log_2 \ln(x^2) = \log_2(2 \ln x) = \log_2 \ln x + 1. Non-example: for f(x)=2xf(x) = 2x on (0,∞)(0, \infty), α(x)=x\alpha(x) = x is not a solution, since α(f(2))=4\alpha(f(2)) = 4 while α(2)+1=3\alpha(2) + 1 = 3. If α\alpha is a real-valued solution and p ⁣:ℝ→ℝp \colon \R \to \R satisfies p(t+1)=p(t)p(t + 1) = p(t), then α+p∘α\alpha + p \circ \alpha is again a solution, so solutions are far from unique without extra conditions. If ff has a fixed point x0x_0, no solution is defined at x0x_0, since α(x0)=α(x0)+1\alpha(x_0) = \alpha(x_0) + 1 is impossible; so the equation is usually posed on a domain without fixed points.
