Abel inversion formula
Builds on Volterra equation of the first kindBeta functionGamma functionRiemann–Liouville integral
Statement
Let , let , and let be continuous. Let Then the function is continuously differentiable on , and In particular, the Volterra equation of the first kind has at most one continuous solution .
Remarks
Proof idea: insert the formula for into and exchange the order of integration. This gives . The substitution turns the inner integral into the Beta function value , which does not depend on or . So , and the fundamental theorem of calculus gives the formula.
Example: for the formula reads , the inversion of Abel's integral equation. With , the inner integral is , so ; indeed .
The statement starts from a solution ; it does not say that every arises. A given is of this form for a continuous only if is continuously differentiable; for instance must vanish at . If is continuously differentiable with , then the solution can also be written .

For a student
In the language of fractional calculus, the equation says , where is the Riemann–Liouville integral of order . The formula then reads , using ; the reflection formula for the Gamma function shows that this agrees with the statement. It solves the tautochrone problem, and its variant for the Abel transform is the basis of Abel inversion in tomography of radially symmetric objects.
