Abel transform as the projection of a radial function
Builds on Abel transformLebesgue integralRadon transformHankel transform
Statement
Let be continuous with . Let be the radial function on with profile . Then for every the integral converges absolutely, and where is the Abel transform of .
Remarks
Since is even in , the line integral is . For , the substitution , with , maps onto and gives the formula; for it is immediate. The absolute convergence follows the same way: is integrable near and tends to as , while is bounded near and integrable. By rotation invariance, the integral of along any line at distance from the origin is also ; this is the Radon transform of .
Example: for the line integral is , which is the Abel transform of at .

For a student
The statement identifies the Abel transform with the two-dimensional Radon transform restricted to radial functions. Together with the projection-slice theorem, it shows that the Fourier transform of the Abel transform of is the Hankel transform of order of , up to constants. This chain is used in tomography of axially symmetric objects, where only one projection is needed.
