Statement

Let (P,≤)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set in which every nonempty chain has a supremum. Let f ⁣:P→Pf \colon P \to P be a monotone map, and let a∈Pa \in P satisfy a≤f(a)a \le f(a). Then ff has a fixed point pp with a≤pa \le p. Moreover, pp can be chosen as the least element of the set {x∈P:f(x)=x and a≤x}\set{x \in P : f(x) = x \text{ and } a \le x}.

Remarks

Proof idea: define x0=ax_0 = a, xα+1=f(xα)x_{\alpha + 1} = f(x_\alpha), and xλ=sup⁡α<λxαx_\lambda = \sup_{\alpha < \lambda} x_\alpha at limit ordinals λ\lambda. By transfinite induction, (xα)(x_\alpha) is increasing and each xαx_\alpha satisfies xα≤f(xα)x_\alpha \le f(x_\alpha), so the suprema exist. The sequence cannot be strictly increasing for all ordinals, since PP is a set, so xα+1=xαx_{\alpha + 1} = x_\alpha for some α\alpha, and p=xαp = x_\alpha is a fixed point. If qq is a fixed point with a≤qa \le q, induction gives xα≤qx_\alpha \le q for all α\alpha, so pp is the least such fixed point. The theorem contains the existence part of the Knaster–Tarski theorem: in a complete lattice, take aa to be the least element. The hypothesis a≤f(a)a \le f(a) is needed. On the two-element antichain {a,b}\set{a, b}, every nonempty chain is a single point, and the swap of aa and bb is monotone and has no fixed point.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem weakens the completeness hypothesis of the Knaster–Tarski theorem to chain-completeness, at the price of needing a starting point aa with a≤f(a)a \le f(a). In a chain-complete poset with a least element, every monotone map has a least fixed point. Compared with the Bourbaki–Witt theorem, it asks for monotonicity instead of x≤f(x)x \le f(x) for all xx, and in return it gives a least fixed point above aa.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
