Definition
Let be a compact, connected complex manifold. Let be the set of meromorphic functions on ; with pointwise operations it is a field that contains as the constant functions. The algebraic dimension of is the transcendence degree of over .
Remarks
By Siegel's theorem, is an integer with .
Example: for , the functions are meromorphic. They are algebraically independent over , because on the chart they are the coordinate functions, and a nonzero polynomial does not vanish on all of . So , and by Siegel's bound .
Example: the diagonal Hopf surface has algebraic dimension , and an Inoue surface has algebraic dimension .
Non-example: if is the disjoint union of two copies of , the connectedness hypothesis fails. Then is not a field: the function equal to on one copy and on the other is a nonzero zero divisor.
The notion extends to irreducible compact complex spaces. A compact connected complex manifold with is a Moishezon manifold.
