Approximately additive function

Builds on Abelian groupNormed vector space

Definition

Let (G,+)(G, +) be an abelian group, let (E,∥⋅∥)(E, \norm{\cdot}) be a normed vector space, and let δ≥0\delta \ge 0. A map f ⁣:G→Ef \colon G \to E is δ\delta-additive if ∥f(x+y)−f(x)−f(y)∥≤δfor all x,y∈G.\norm{f(x + y) - f(x) - f(y)} \le \delta \quad \text{for all } x, y \in G. A map is approximately additive if it is δ\delta-additive for some δ≥0\delta \ge 0.

Remarks

The 00-additive maps are exactly the additive maps. Example: f(x)=⌊x⌋f(x) = \floor{x} on ℝ\R is 11-additive. Write x=⌊x⌋+sx = \floor{x} + s and y=⌊y⌋+ty = \floor{y} + t with s,t∈[0,1)s, t \in [0, 1); then ⌊x+y⌋−⌊x⌋−⌊y⌋=⌊s+t⌋∈{0,1}\floor{x + y} - \floor{x} - \floor{y} = \floor{s + t} \in \set{0, 1}. Non-example: f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 on ℝ\R is not approximately additive, since f(x+y)−f(x)−f(y)=2xyf(x + y) - f(x) - f(y) = 2xy is unbounded. Every map f=A+bf = A + b with AA additive and ∥b(x)∥≤β\norm{b(x)} \le \beta for all xx is 3β3\beta-additive.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
