Special functions Orthogonal polynomials Theorem
Askey–Gasper inequality
Builds on Jacobi polynomials
Statement
Let denote the Jacobi polynomials. Let be real numbers with and , and let be an integer. Then for every ,
Remarks
The denominators are positive: for . For all denominators equal , and the inequality says on . Check for and : the sum is , which is nonnegative on and vanishes at . Askey and Gasper proved it in 1976. A short proof by Ekhad (1993) treats the case in its form. An identity found with the Wilf–Zeilberger method writes this as a positive combination of other series. These are nonnegative by Clausen's formula, which expresses them as squares of series.

For a student
Sums of the form are partial sums of Jacobi expansions, and their positivity is a question of positive summability kernels. The case can be rewritten as the positivity of a terminating hypergeometric series on . De Branges needed this form for integer values of to finish his proof.
