Asymptotic stability of linear recurrences

Builds on Linear difference equationCharacteristic polynomial of a linear recurrenceSchur stable polynomialStability of a difference equationLimit of a sequence

Statement

Let d≥1d \ge 1 and let c0,…,cd−1c_0, \dots, c_{d-1} be complex numbers with c0≠0c_0 \ne 0. Consider the linear recurrence xn+d=cd−1xn+d−1+⋯+c1xn+1+c0xn,n≥0,x_{n+d} = c_{d-1} x_{n+d-1} + \cdots + c_1 x_{n+1} + c_0 x_n, \qquad n \ge 0, and its characteristic polynomial χ(z)=zd−cd−1zd−1−⋯−c0\chi(z) = z^d - c_{d-1} z^{d-1} - \cdots - c_0. The following are equivalent.

  1. Every solution (xn)(x_n) satisfies xn→0x_n \to 0 as n→∞n \to \infty.
  2. The zero solution is asymptotically stable.
  3. The polynomial χ\chi is Schur stable, that is, every root λ\lambda of χ\chi satisfies ∣λ∣<1\abs{\lambda} < 1.

Remarks

Every solution is a finite sum of terms p(n)λnp(n) \lambda^n, where λ\lambda is a root of χ\chi and pp is a polynomial of degree less than the multiplicity of λ\lambda. If all roots satisfy ∣λ∣<1\abs{\lambda} < 1, each such term tends to 00, because ∣λ∣n\abs{\lambda}^n decays faster than any polynomial grows. If some root has ∣λ∣≥1\abs{\lambda} \ge 1, then xn=λnx_n = \lambda^n is a solution that does not tend to 00. For example, xn+2=xn+1−12xnx_{n+2} = x_{n+1} - \tfrac{1}{2} x_n has characteristic polynomial z2−z+12z^2 - z + \tfrac{1}{2} with roots of modulus 1/21/\sqrt{2}, so all its solutions tend to 00. In contrast, xn+2=xnx_{n+2} = x_n has roots ±1\pm 1 on the unit circle, and its solution xn=1x_n = 1 stays bounded but does not tend to 00. Suppose all roots satisfy ∣λ∣≤1\abs{\lambda} \le 1, some root lies on the unit circle, and the roots on the circle are simple. Then the zero solution is stable but not asymptotically stable.

Going deeper

For a student

The result is the discrete counterpart of the fact that x′=Axx' = Ax is asymptotically stable exactly when all eigenvalues of AA have negative real part. Writing the recurrence as Xn+1=CXnX_{n+1} = C X_n with the companion matrix CC, the condition says that the spectral radius of CC is less than 11. In practice one does not compute the roots; tests such as the Jury stability criterion decide Schur stability from the coefficients alone. The same criterion governs the local stability of a fixed point of a nonlinear map through its linearization.
