Asymptotics of Bessel functions

Builds on Bessel function of the first kindBessel function of the second kindGamma functionAsymptotic equivalence

Statement

Let ν\nu be a real number, and let JνJ_\nu and YνY_\nu be the Bessel functions of the first kind and of the second kind. Let Γ\Gamma be the gamma function, and let ∼\sim denote asymptotic equivalence.

  1. (Large argument.) As x→+∞x \to +\infty, Jν(x)=2πx(cos⁡(x−νπ2−π4)+O(1x)),J_\nu(x) = \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}} \left( \cos\left( x - \frac{\nu\pi}{2} - \frac{\pi}{4} \right) + O\left( \frac{1}{x} \right) \right), Yν(x)=2πx(sin⁡(x−νπ2−π4)+O(1x)).Y_\nu(x) = \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}} \left( \sin\left( x - \frac{\nu\pi}{2} - \frac{\pi}{4} \right) + O\left( \frac{1}{x} \right) \right).
  2. (Small argument.) As x→0+x \to 0^+, if ν\nu is not a negative integer then Jν(x)∼1Γ(ν+1)(x2)νJ_\nu(x) \sim \frac{1}{\Gamma(\nu + 1)} \left( \frac{x}{2} \right)^\nu; if ν>0\nu > 0 then Yν(x)∼−Γ(ν)π(2x)νY_\nu(x) \sim -\frac{\Gamma(\nu)}{\pi} \left( \frac{2}{x} \right)^\nu; and Y0(x)∼2πln⁡xY_0(x) \sim \frac{2}{\pi} \ln x.

Remarks

The small-argument forms are the leading terms of the power series of JνJ_\nu and of the series of YνY_\nu obtained from its definition. The large-argument forms come from an integral representation of the Hankel functions Hν(1)=Jν+iYνH^{(1)}_\nu = J_\nu + iY_\nu and the stationary-phase method. They are the first terms of full asymptotic expansions in powers of 1x\frac{1}{x}. Example: for ν=12\nu = \frac{1}{2}, J1/2(x)=2πxsin⁡xJ_{1/2}(x) = \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}} \sin x exactly, and indeed cos⁡(x−π2)=sin⁡x\cos\left( x - \frac{\pi}{2} \right) = \sin x, with no error term. The large-argument form holds for fixed ν\nu; it fails when ν\nu grows with xx, for instance when ν\nu is close to xx, where the transition is described by Airy functions.

Going deeper

For a student

The large-argument form explains why the positive zeros of JνJ_\nu are eventually spaced by about π\pi. The amplitude 1x\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}} reflects conservation of energy for cylindrical waves, whose wavefronts have length proportional to xx. The small-argument forms decide which solution is allowed in a boundary value problem on a disc: regularity at the centre excludes YνY_\nu. For modified Bessel functions the analogues are Iν(x)∼ex2πxI_\nu(x) \sim \frac{e^x}{\sqrt{2\pi x}} and Kν(x)∼π2x e−xK_\nu(x) \sim \sqrt{\frac{\pi}{2x}}\, e^{-x}.
