Definition
Let be a real weakly stationary process: , the mean does not depend on , and the covariance depends only on . The autocovariance function is for . If , the autocorrelation function is It is the correlation coefficient of and . For observations of a time series with mean , the sample autocovariance and sample autocorrelation at lag are
Remarks
Every autocorrelation function satisfies , and . It is nonnegative definite: for all real and integers , since this sum is .
Example: let be uncorrelated with mean and variance , and let . Then , and for , so and for .
Non-example: for a random walk , the variance depends on , so the process is not weakly stationary and is not defined.
The divisor in , rather than , makes the sample autocovariance nonnegative definite. In signal processing, autocorrelation often means the unnormalized .
