Autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity
Builds on Time seriesConditional varianceHeteroscedasticityIndependent and identically distributed random variables
Definition
Let be an integer. A real time series is an ARCH() process if it satisfies the following conditions.
- for all , where are independent and identically distributed random variables with mean and variance .
- for all , where and are constants and .
- is independent of for all .
Then is the conditional variance of given the past .
Remarks
The GARCH(, ) model replaces clause 2 by with .
Example: take , and . If the process is weakly stationary with variance , then taking expectations in clause 2 gives , so . In general a weakly stationary ARCH() process exists if and only if , and then its variance is .
Non-example: the rule fails clause 2 because . It gives a negative "variance" as soon as .
An ARCH process is uncorrelated in time, but it is not independent: the squares follow an autoregressive pattern.

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
