Definition

Let q∈ℂq \in \C with 0<∣q∣<10 < \abs{q} < 1, let r,s≥0r, s \ge 0 be integers, and let a1,…,ar,b1,…,bs∈ℂa_1, \dots, a_r, b_1, \dots, b_s \in \C with bj≠q−mb_j \ne q^{-m} for all jj and all integers m≥0m \ge 0. Write (c1,…,ck;q)n=(c1;q)n⋯(ck;q)n(c_1, \dots, c_k; q)_n = (c_1; q)_n \cdots (c_k; q)_n with the q-Pochhammer symbol. The basic hypergeometric series is the power series in zz rϕs(a1,…,arb1,…,bs;q,z)=∑n=0∞(a1,…,ar;q)n(b1,…,bs,q;q)n((−1)nq(n2))1+s−rzn.{}_r\phi_s \left( \begin{matrix} a_1, \dots, a_r \\ b_1, \dots, b_s \end{matrix} ; q, z \right) = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} \frac{(a_1, \dots, a_r; q)_n}{(b_1, \dots, b_s, q; q)_n} \left( (-1)^n q^{\binom{n}{2}} \right)^{1 + s - r} z^n. The bilateral basic hypergeometric series is rψs(a1,…,arb1,…,bs;q,z)=∑n=−∞∞(a1,…,ar;q)n(b1,…,bs;q)n((−1)nq(n2))s−rzn,{}_r\psi_s \left( \begin{matrix} a_1, \dots, a_r \\ b_1, \dots, b_s \end{matrix} ; q, z \right) = \sum_{n=-\infty}^{\infty} \frac{(a_1, \dots, a_r; q)_n}{(b_1, \dots, b_s; q)_n} \left( (-1)^n q^{\binom{n}{2}} \right)^{s - r} z^n, where (a;q)−n=1/(aq−n;q)n(a; q)_{-n} = 1 / (a q^{-n}; q)_n for n≥1n \ge 1.

Remarks

For r=s+1r = s + 1 the series rϕs{}_r\phi_s converges for ∣z∣<1\abs{z} < 1; for r≤sr \le s it converges for all z∈ℂz \in \C. If some ai=q−Na_i = q^{-N} with an integer N≥0N \ge 0, then (ai;q)n=0(a_i; q)_n = 0 for n>Nn > N, and the series terminates. The factor ((−1)nq(n2))1+s−r\left( (-1)^n q^{\binom{n}{2}} \right)^{1+s-r} makes the limit ar→∞a_r \to \infty of rϕs(… ;q,z/ar){}_r\phi_s(\dots; q, z/a_r) a series r−1ϕs{}_{r-1}\phi_s.

Example: 1ϕ0(a;−;q,z)=∑n≥0(a;q)n(q;q)nzn{}_1\phi_0(a; -; q, z) = \sum_{n \ge 0} \frac{(a; q)_n}{(q; q)_n} z^n, and here the ratio of the terms of index n+1n+1 and nn is 1−aqn1−qn+1 z\frac{1 - a q^n}{1 - q^{n+1}}\, z, a rational function of qnq^n. By the q-binomial theorem it equals (az;q)∞(z;q)∞\frac{(az; q)_\infty}{(z; q)_\infty} for ∣z∣<1\abs{z} < 1.

Non-example: ∑n≥0znn!\sum_{n \ge 0} \frac{z^n}{n!} is a hypergeometric series but not a basic one, since the ratio zn+1\frac{z}{n+1} is not a rational function of qnq^n.

As q→1q \to 1, (qa;q)n(1−q)n\frac{(q^a; q)_n}{(1 - q)^n} tends to the Pochhammer symbol (a)n(a)_n, so s+1ϕs(qa1,… ;qb1,… ;q,z){}_{s+1}\phi_s(q^{a_1}, \dots; q^{b_1}, \dots; q, z) tends to s+1Fs(a1,… ;b1,… ;z){}_{s+1}F_s(a_1, \dots; b_1, \dots; z).
