Special functions Basic hypergeometric functions Theorem

q-binomial theorem

Builds on q-Pochhammer symbolBasic hypergeometric series

Statement

Let a,q,z∈ℂa, q, z \in \C with ∣q∣<1\abs{q} < 1 and ∣z∣<1\abs{z} < 1. Then ∑n=0∞(a;q)n(q;q)nzn=(az;q)∞(z;q)∞,\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} \frac{(a; q)_n}{(q; q)_n} z^n = \frac{(az; q)_\infty}{(z; q)_\infty}, where (⋅ ;q)n(\cdot\,; q)_n and (⋅ ;q)∞(\cdot\,; q)_\infty are q-Pochhammer symbols. In the notation of basic hypergeometric series, 1ϕ0(a;−;q,z)=(az;q)∞(z;q)∞{}_1\phi_0(a; -; q, z) = \frac{(az; q)_\infty}{(z; q)_\infty}.

Remarks

Proof idea: let f(z)=∑ncnznf(z) = \sum_n c_n z^n be the left side, with cn=(a;q)n(q;q)nc_n = \frac{(a; q)_n}{(q; q)_n}. Comparing the coefficients of znz^n on both sides, with cn(1−qn)=cn−1(1−aqn−1)c_n (1 - q^n) = c_{n-1} (1 - a q^{n-1}), gives (1−z)f(z)=(1−az)f(qz)(1 - z) f(z) = (1 - az) f(qz). Iterating this functional equation gives f(z)=(az;q)N(z;q)Nf(qNz)f(z) = \frac{(az; q)_N}{(z; q)_N} f(q^N z), and f(qNz)→f(0)=1f(q^N z) \to f(0) = 1 as N→∞N \to \infty. Special cases: a=0a = 0 gives ∑nzn(q;q)n=1(z;q)∞\sum_n \frac{z^n}{(q; q)_n} = \frac{1}{(z; q)_\infty}, and replacing aa by a/ba/b and zz by bzbz and letting b→0b \to 0 gives ∑n(−1)nq(n2)anzn(q;q)n=(az;q)∞\sum_n \frac{(-1)^n q^{\binom{n}{2}} a^n z^n}{(q; q)_n} = (az; q)_\infty. With a=q−Na = q^{-N} and zz replaced by −qNz-q^N z, one obtains the finite form ∏k=0N−1(1+qkz)=∑k=0Nq(k2)(Nk)qzk\prod_{k=0}^{N-1} (1 + q^k z) = \sum_{k=0}^{N} q^{\binom{k}{2}} \binom{N}{k}_q z^k with the Gaussian binomial coefficients. The hypothesis ∣z∣<1\abs{z} < 1 is needed for a∉{1,q−1,q−2,… }a \notin \set{1, q^{-1}, q^{-2}, \dots}, since the series then has radius of convergence 11.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the simplest summation formula for basic hypergeometric series, and many others follow from it. Together with the case a=0a = 0 it gives Euler's two expansions of 1/(z;q)∞1/(z; q)_\infty and (z;q)∞(z; q)_\infty, which are generating functions for partitions into parts of a given kind. Its bilateral extension is Ramanujan's 1psi1 summation.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
