Special functions Basic hypergeometric functions Theorem
Ramanujan's 1psi1 summation
Statement
Let with , , , and . For an integer put , so that is defined for all through the q-Pochhammer symbol. Then In the notation of bilateral basic hypergeometric series, the left side is .
Remarks
The condition makes the part with converge, and makes the part with converge. Proof idea: for the terms with vanish and the identity is the q-binomial theorem; then follows by a shift of the summation index. Both sides are analytic in in a disc, and they agree on the points , , which accumulate at , so they agree everywhere by the identity theorem. Example: with (a limit) and replaced by , letting turns the identity into the Jacobi triple product. The identity is due to Ramanujan, who stated it without proof; Hahn and Jackson gave the first published proofs around 1950.

For a student
Many product formulas of the theory of partitions and of theta functions are special cases. It is the starting point for the bilateral series , of which Bailey's summation is the main generalization.
