Combinatorics Extremal combinatorics Theorem

Bondy's theorem

Builds on Family of setsSymmetric difference

Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let XX be a set with nn elements. Let S1,…,SnS_1, \ldots, S_n be nn distinct subsets of XX. Then there is an element x∈Xx \in X such that the sets S1∖{x},…,Sn∖{x}S_1 \setminus \set{x}, \ldots, S_n \setminus \set{x} are still distinct.

Remarks

Suppose that no such xx exists. Then for each x∈Xx \in X there are i≠ji \ne j with symmetric difference Si△Sj={x}S_i \mathbin{\triangle} S_j = \set{x}; join SiS_i and SjS_j by an edge labelled xx. This gives a graph on the nn sets with nn edges, all with distinct labels, so it contains a cycle. Going around the cycle, the symmetric differences of the edges combine to ∅\emptyset, but a symmetric difference of distinct singletons is not empty, a contradiction.

Example: X={1,2}X = \set{1, 2} with S1=∅S_1 = \emptyset and S2={1}S_2 = \set{1}. Removing x=2x = 2 leaves ∅\emptyset and {1}\set{1}, which are still distinct. The bound is sharp: for X={1,…,n}X = \set{1, \ldots, n} the n+1n + 1 sets ∅,{1},…,{n}\emptyset, \set{1}, \ldots, \set{n} become non-distinct after removing any element xx, since {x}\set{x} becomes ∅\emptyset.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is a small result of extremal set theory with a short graph proof. It says that nn distinct rows of a 00–11 matrix with nn columns stay distinct after deleting a suitable column. Its proof is a typical use of a graph to encode a family of sets.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
