Born series

Definition
Let be a Banach space of functions on , and let be an incoming wave. Let be multiplication by a potential. Let be the outgoing free resolvent, the convolution with the outgoing Green's function of . Assume that is a bounded linear operator on . Consider the scattering equation , an integral equation of the second kind. The Born series of is the formal series Its partial sum is the (first) Born approximation.
Remarks
If the operator norm satisfies , the series converges in and its sum is the unique solution of , by the Neumann series. Replacing by with a coupling constant , this holds for all small enough .
Example: in one dimension, take the point interaction with ; then the outgoing Green's function is , and . For each term is a multiple of , and the series sums to when . At this gives , which solves , as it must.
Non-example: for in the same model the geometric series diverges, although the equation still has the solution given by the closed formula. So the Born series may fail to converge even when the scattering problem is well posed.
