Bounded symmetric domain
Builds on Biholomorphism
Definition
Let be a bounded domain, that is, a bounded connected open set. The domain is a bounded symmetric domain if for every there is a biholomorphism such that:
- ;
- is an isolated fixed point of .
Remarks
The map is called the symmetry at , and it is unique. Its derivative at is . A bounded symmetric domain is homogeneous: its automorphism group acts transitively. A bounded domain that is homogeneous and has a symmetry at one point is symmetric.
Example: the unit disc . At take : it is an involution with only the fixed point . At take , where is an automorphism of with and . Then is an involution whose only fixed point is .
Non-example: the annulus with . Its automorphisms are the rotations and the maps . So each orbit of is a union of at most two circles, is not homogeneous, and it cannot be symmetric.
The unit ball of and the polydisc are bounded symmetric domains, and so is any product of bounded symmetric domains.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
