Definition

Let c≥0c \ge 0, and let φ\varphi be a holomorphic function on the half-plane Re⁡s>c\operatorname{Re} s > c. Let γ>c\gamma > c, and suppose that for each t>0t > 0 the integral below converges. Here the integral is the limit, as R→∞R \to \infty, of the integrals over the segment from γ−iR\gamma - iR to γ+iR\gamma + iR. The Bromwich interpretation of the Heaviside expression φ(p)H\varphi(p) H is the function x(t)=12πi∫γ−i∞γ+i∞φ(s)s est ds,t>0,x(t) = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \int_{\gamma - i\infty}^{\gamma + i\infty} \frac{\varphi(s)}{s} \, e^{st} \, ds, \qquad t > 0, a Bromwich integral, with x(t)=0x(t) = 0 for t<0t < 0.

Remarks

Under suitable growth conditions on φ\varphi, the Laplace transform of xx is φ(s)/s\varphi(s)/s, so this interpretation agrees with the Laplace transform reading of the Heaviside operational calculus. By Cauchy's theorem, the value does not depend on γ>c\gamma > c. When φ\varphi is meromorphic and the line can be closed to the left, x(t)x(t) is the sum of the residues of φ(s)est/s\varphi(s) e^{st} / s.

Example: φ(p)=p−n\varphi(p) = p^{-n} with n≥0n \ge 0. For t>0t > 0, the line can be closed to the left, and the only pole of est/sn+1e^{st}/s^{n+1} is at 00, with residue tn/n!t^n / n!. So x(t)=tn/n!x(t) = t^n/n!, which is Heaviside's rule p−nH=tnH/n!p^{-n} H = t^n H / n!.

Non-example: φ(s)=e−s2\varphi(s) = e^{-s^2} is entire, but on the line s=γ+iys = \gamma + iy one has ∣φ(s)∣=ey2−γ2\abs{\varphi(s)} = e^{y^2 - \gamma^2}. So the integrand grows without bound, the integral diverges for every tt, and φ(p)H\varphi(p) H has no Bromwich interpretation.
