Builds on Gamma functionInverse Mellin transformComplex power

Statement

Let c>0c > 0 and let y∈ℂy \in \C with Re⁡y>0\operatorname{Re} y > 0. Let y−s=e−slog⁡yy^{-s} = e^{-s \log y}, with the principal branch of log⁡y\log y. Then e−y=12πi∫c−i∞c+i∞Γ(s) y−s ds,e^{-y} = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \int_{c - i\infty}^{c + i\infty} \Gamma(s) \, y^{-s} \, ds, where Γ\Gamma is the gamma function and the integral converges absolutely.

Remarks

For real y>0y > 0 this is the inverse Mellin transform of Γ=ℳ[e−x]\Gamma = \mathcal{M}[e^{-x}], so it follows from the Mellin inversion theorem. For complex yy, put ∣arg⁡y∣=θ<π/2\abs{\arg y} = \theta < \pi/2; then ∣y−c−it∣=∣y∣−cetarg⁡y≤∣y∣−ceθ∣t∣\abs{y^{-c - it}} = \abs{y}^{-c} e^{t \arg y} \le \abs{y}^{-c} e^{\theta \abs{t}}, while ∣Γ(c+it)∣\abs{\Gamma(c + it)} decays like ∣t∣c−1/2e−π∣t∣/2\abs{t}^{c - 1/2} e^{-\pi \abs{t}/2} by Stirling's formula. So the integral converges absolutely and locally uniformly, it is holomorphic in yy, and the identity extends from y>0y > 0 by the identity theorem. A direct proof moves the line of integration to the left: by the residue theorem, the poles of Γ\Gamma at s=−ks = -k with residues (−1)k/k!(-1)^k / k! give ∑k≥0(−1)kyk/k!=e−y\sum_{k \ge 0} (-1)^k y^k / k! = e^{-y}. The hypothesis c>0c > 0 is needed: for −1<c<0-1 < c < 0 the line passes to the left of the pole at 00, and the integral equals e−y−1e^{-y} - 1.

Going deeper

For a student

This integral is the prototype of Mellin–Barnes integrals and of the method of shifting contours. In analytic number theory it is applied to y=nxy = n x and summed over nn: the sum ∑na(n)e−nx\sum_n a(n) e^{-n x} then becomes 12πi∫Γ(s)F(s)x−s ds\frac{1}{2\pi i} \int \Gamma(s) F(s) x^{-s} \, ds with FF the Dirichlet series of the a(n)a(n). Shifting the line past the poles of Γ(s)F(s)\Gamma(s) F(s) gives asymptotic expansions of the exponential sum as x→0+x \to 0^+. It is the smooth counterpart of Perron's formula, which uses the kernel xs/sx^{s}/s instead of Γ(s)x−s\Gamma(s) x^{-s} and has worse convergence.
