Example
Let be integers and let with . Let , and let the additive group act on by The quotient is a Calabi–Eckmann manifold, a compact complex manifold of dimension .
Check that is diffeomorphic to : each orbit meets in exactly one point. Write . The conditions and read and . Since , they have exactly one solution . The action is free and proper and is by holomorphic maps, so the quotient is a complex manifold of dimension .
Remarks
The map makes a holomorphic fibre bundle over (see complex projective space) whose fibres are elliptic curves. For one gets an elliptic curve, and for a Hopf manifold diffeomorphic to . For the manifold is simply connected and has , so is not Kähler: a compact Kähler manifold has a nonzero class in . So Calabi and Eckmann's construction gives simply connected compact complex manifolds that are not Kähler, for example on .
