Complex projective space
Example
Let . Complex projective space is the quotient of by the relation for ; the class of is written . So is the set of complex lines through in .
It is a complex manifold of dimension . For , let and , where the hat means that the entry is left out. Each is a well-defined homeomorphism of onto , and the cover . On the coordinate that stands for is nonzero. The components of the transition map are and the other coordinates divided by , so it is holomorphic. The space is Hausdorff and compact: it is the continuous image of the unit sphere , since every line meets the sphere.
Remarks
For one gets the Riemann sphere, and for the complex projective plane. The map is a circle bundle, the Hopf fibration when . The Fubini–Study metric makes a Kähler manifold. By Chow's theorem, every closed complex submanifold of is a projective variety. By the Kodaira embedding theorem, a compact complex manifold embeds in some if and only if it carries a positive line bundle. Since is compact and connected, its only holomorphic functions are the constants.
