Capacity of a disc and a segment
Builds on Logarithmic capacityChebyshev constantCapacity equals transfinite diameter and Chebyshev constantChebyshev polynomials
Example
Let be the closed disc of radius and let be a closed segment of length in . Their logarithmic capacities are
Check for the disc, with the Chebyshev constant. Translate the disc so that its centre is ; capacity does not change under translations. For a monic polynomial , Parseval's identity on the circle gives So , with equality for . Hence the Chebyshev constant is , and by the equality of capacity and Chebyshev constant the capacity is .
Check for the segment. Move it by a rotation and a translation to , which does not change capacity. For , the monic Chebyshev polynomial has maximum on the interval, and no monic polynomial of degree has a smaller maximum there. So the Chebyshev constant of is . Capacity scales linearly, so the segment of length has capacity .
The two results show that capacity is not a measure of area. The segment has area zero but positive capacity . The disc of diameter has capacity .
