Difference and functional equations Definition
Carleman matrix
Definition
Let be a field and let be a formal power series over . For integers , let be the coefficient of in the power , with . The Carleman matrix of is the infinite matrix . So
Remarks
Example: for with , one has , so is diagonal with entries . For it is the identity matrix.
Non-example: the diagonal matrix with entries is not a Carleman matrix. Its row would force , and then row would have to list the coefficients of , not of .
If , then , a product of infinite matrices in which each entry is a finite sum. Check: , and for because starts at . In particular, if , then for the iterates of , and is upper triangular with diagonal entries . The transpose of is the Bell matrix of , which reverses the order of products.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
